Course Description: This course focuses on the role of individuals in today’s legal system and how our legal system affects their lives. The approach is to provide practical information and problem solving opportunities that will help develop in students the knowledge and skills necessary to survive in our increasingly litigious society. The course will cover topics such as (but not limited to): the Legal System, the Constitution, Criminal Law, the Criminal Justice Process, Civil Law/Torts, Family Law, and Individual Rights and Responsibilities. During this course we will make use of a variety of instructional methods such as independent study, role playing, class and small group activities, mock trials, and case studies. Community resource people such as lawyers, judges, and police officers may be involved as guests in class. The course will provide information and competency building activities designed to provide students with the ability to analyze, evaluate, and learn to resolve disputes.
